Training Information

TRAINING OVERVIEW

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) skills have been shown to help clients quickly and safely reconsolidate traumatic memories, reduce posttrauma symptoms, and live fuller lives.

Moreover, neuroscience research provides insight into how and why EMDR skills and other evidence-informed memory reconsolidation techniques may be effective. In this two-day workshop, trauma psychologist Dr. Jennifer Sweeton explores the neural bases of trauma treatment methods, including EMDR techniques, and provides step-by-step guidance on how to integrate these skills into clinical practice.

Professionals who attend this highly experiential training will complete hands-on practice of EMDR skills, and should leave feeling confident in their ability to begin using EMDR techniques in their clinical work with clients. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this two-day training, participants will be able to:

  • Name the five main brain regions involved in trauma.
  • Describe the role of the hippocampus in memory formation, and how the hippocampus can make memory errors.
  • Identify at least three ways EMDR has been shown to change the brain in the direction of health.
  • State the eight phases of EMDR.
  • Practice at least two resourcing techniques.
  • Explain how desensitization and reprocessing facilitate memory reconsolidation after trauma.
  • Learn and practice target sequence planning.
  • Describe the differences between EMD, EMDr, and EMDR, and provide a brief explanation of when to use each.
  • Learn and practice desensitization of negative cognitions.
  • Learn and practice installation of a positive cognition.
  • Explain why body scanning is an important EMDR skill, and describe at least one way to facilitate body scanning.
  • State how “future template” can be helpful when treating trauma and anxiety.
